Does anyone know what this is? I found it in the murky waters of Esme's folded-up paddling pool. It is 1cm long and has a 2cm whiplike tail. It has many relatives, all of whom live in our garden. Will they grow up to be cute and furry, or will they try to burrow into our heads?Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

WTF, with a tail

It's a Rat-tailed Maggot, which is the larva of the Drone Fly, Eristalis tenax, which is a hoverfly that sort-of mimics the honeybee. They're unlikely to do any harm, tho' I admit they probably look unsavoury in a paddling pool. It's interestng to have them as one doesn't often see the larval stage 'cos they generally inhabit stagnant water. Oh and they breathe through that tail.
that being said you must chop off the tail and tell us what happens!
give it 24 hours and it'll be trying to have sex with Ian and shooting the figures from Esme's bus across the living room.
Stand on it now before its too late and it replaces you like something out of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.
No.
Just no.
It was brave of you to ask.
A rat-tailed maggot in a swimming pool? Must be about time for Big Brother 9.
