Behold the walrus

Clive wouldn't leave me alone even after the knicker-shooing.

I expected Jeff, the artist, to be a man of few words, sort of tall, dour and dusty and faintly redolent of pipe smoke, as befits someone who spends a lot of time creating great art in a workshop. He was completely the opposite, and arrived with a big smile and an even bigger parcel, and I got to shake his hand hello and goodbye, thereby stealing a double dose of genius from him. He stayed an hour, and we sat at the table talking all about the making of the walrus, about his three kids, about my one baby, about his neighbour, about cycling in London and about doing up old houses. He was very happy to meet Esme, and explained that he has a real soft spot for babies and a secret wish for grandchildren at the moment. Esme got to play with his battered, scarred, proper woodworking hands, so she got to absorb some artistic genius too, and he made a point of popping back to say goodbye to her as he left. What a thoroughly great bloke.

Here I am stroking the walrus (stop laughing, you there in the cheap seats). I wanted you to see how alive it seems but it's hard to capture on film.

It is not the first walrus to live in this house, but it is by far the best.

That is really cool. I'm envious. Even about the sex with a 37 year old, as in this house, we're well past it.

I'm hoping by typing in this box connected to your blog, I can steal some genius. Of course, if I ever got any, I'd get all flustered and wave my knickers at it.

I love it, too... and so? What did Ian think of the walrus?

That is the coolest thing i have seen in a long time.

I would have left you alone after a knicker-shooing, just so you know.

That walrus is so endearing. Your video makes me want one, too!

I love the walrus! It reponded so well to the stroking, too. Tis genius, the whole thing...

Many happy returns to Ian :-)

Walruses are known for responding well to being rubbed.

Very cool walrus!

Speaking for everyone, hope that you post some of your new art, now that you've had a fresh infusion of genius (Esme, too).

I'm a huge fan of your older "cat" inspired work.

I really liked the video - I hadn't realised that it would move. Happy birthday to Ian, I hope he loved the great gift.

I didn't realise how well it would move either until Jeff unwrapped it and it was like he had a live animal in his arms. It wiggles appreciatively every time you give it a fuss. Ian absolutely loves it.

Now I've suggested that 'walrus' might be a euphemism, everything I write about it sounds utterly filthy.

The Walrus is STUPENDOUS. It's like having a pet walrus that doesn't shit. I saw the list of animals he makes and I want one of each!

The walrus is fantastic - does he have a website? I'm thinking that would be a great gift for a few folks I know.

De-lurking here to say thanks for the posts on this amazing chap. I wonder if he could make an Australian Cattle dog?

Your blog is great.

Does he do a platypus? My mother is really into platypi (platypusses?) and I need to get her a birthday gift.

Antonia said...

He might well do a platypus. He seems like he can make anything.

Jhianna: the website is www.wobblywood.demon.co.uk. Wonderful stuff.

Love the walrus and all handcrafted wooden things like this. You can see more of the types of wooden things I like personally at www.tishtashtoys.com It's my own business and I've selected all the wooden items myself! Enjoy.
